ABOUT

Understanding the relationships between marine organisms and their microbial symbionts

Marine ecosystems are experiencing unprecedented stress due to climate change and anthropogenic activities, leading to profound shifts in the ecology of marine host-microbe symbioses. Understanding the intricate relationships between marine organisms and their microbial symbionts offers critical insights into enhancing the resilience of these vulnerable and foundational ecosystems.

The Trends in Marine Host-Microbe Symbioses Symposium aims to catalyze discussions on the latest conceptual frameworks and technological approaches
for studying these complex interactions. Central themes will include fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and encouraging open data sharing across research groups to expedite scientific progress. The symposium will also spotlight the pressing need
for microbiome stewardship and the implementation of actionable, science-driven strategies to mitigate climate change impacts and preserve biodiversity.

The BMMO Network

The Beneficial Microbes for Marine Organisms (BMMO) network was funded by Raquel Peixoto and Michael Sweet, in 2017, aiming to establish formal and close collaboration between researchers working on the interactions of marine hosts and their associated microbiomes and microbiome manipulation. Our aim is to facilitate the collaborative work between these groups to elucidate different beneficial and pathogenic roles of the microbiome associated with marine organisms, strengthening our efforts towards marine ecosystems protection and restoration, as well as the development of sustainable aquaculture systems.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

The #TMHM Symposium seeks to explore scientific insights and practical approaches to address biodiversity loss driven by climate change, with an emphasis on microbiome stewardship. It will also focus on accessible strategies for the general public and effective dissemination of knowledge to drive action.
